Rocky Mountaineer Route Map

First Passage to the West Route
If you have a passion for historical adventure, First Passage to the West is your ideal Rocky Mountaineer experience. Retrace the steps of 19th century explorers, but in luxurious custom-built train coaches instead of on stubborn packhorses. This route transports you all the way back to a simpler time, when Canada was finally united by the transcontinental railroad at Craigellachie, BC. The Last Spike, exactly 125 years ago, was an exclamation point to an incredible story of engineering and human endeavour. Your experience onboard the Rocky Mountaineer will take you across the 500-foot span of Stoney Creek Bridge and through the world-famous Spiral Tunnels — a monument to ingenuity and perseverance that took 1,000 men almost two years to build. Traverse the spectacular Continental Divide via Kicking Horse Pass — so named after the geologist/naturalist James Hector was knocked unconscious by one of his packhorses during the Palliser Expedition of 1858. As you wind your way through the Canadian Rockies you’ll take in a spellbinding range of scenery sculpted by the elements over million of years. The ruggedness of the terrain is in marked contrast to the warmth of your Rocky Mountaineer Onboard Attendants. The genuine atmosphere onboard the train, coupled with the camaraderie of fellow guests, makes the journey an experience you’ll remember for years to come.

Journey through the Clouds Route
The Journey through the Clouds is the adventure that will take your appreciation for natural wonders to new heights. From the raging waters of Hell’s Gate to the tranquility of the highest point in the Canadian Rockies, you’ll gain a lifetime of appreciation for the beauty of Western Canada in a matter of days. During this amazing experience, you and your fellow travellers will be enchanted by the serenity of Mount Robson — at almost 13,000 feet, the highest summit in the Canadian Rockies. Interspersed between jagged peaks, you can view pristine icefields and possibly the peaceful grazing of moose, elk and other wildlife. As you cross the Thompson River, you may see whitewater rafters white-knuckling their way through Jaws of Death Gorge. Look up and you’re often rewarded with the sight of an eagle or osprey soaring on the mountain breeze. The final leg of the trip takes you through Jasper National Park — the largest Canadian Rocky Mountain national park, and part of a spectacular World Heritage Site. Its rugged beauty is a perfect symbol of Canada, and Rocky Mountaineer’s legendary hospitality makes the experience all the more memorable.

Rainforest to Gold Rush Route
The Rainforest to Gold Rush experience is the perfect journey if you wish to immerse yourself in natural beauty and colourful heritage. Awe-inspiring natural landscape bears witness to tales of a gold fever that captured the interest of adventurers the world over, and led to the creation of the province of British Columbia. This journey features some of the most dramatic scenery in the world of rail travel. You will wind along the shores of Anderson and Seton Lakes, which formed part of the route to the Fraser and Cariboo gold fields. The landscape varies dramatically, and includes the desert-like Fraser Canyon, named for explorer Simon Fraser who made it part of his perilous voyage to the coast. The Coastal Rainforest — also known as the Great Bear Rainforest — is the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world, and home to some of the oldest and largest trees on Earth. Your halfway point is the charming town of Quesnel. The journey continues through the Rocky Mountain Trench, framed by two mountain ranges. Soon you’ll be awestruck by the 13,000-foot grandeur of the highest peak in the Rockies, Mount Robson, before continuing on to Jasper — one of Canada’s pre-eminent national parks.

Whistler Sea to Sky Climb Route
For a different experience, extend your Rocky Mountaineer rail vacation with a trip on the Whistler Sea to Sky Climb between Vancouver and Whistler. Relax and fully appreciate the breathtaking views on this three-hour journey. The natural beauty of the Coast Mountain Range is a captivating landscape that will have you continually reaching for your camera. En route you’ll see a number of memorable sights, including Brandywine Falls, a spectacular 230-foot cascade framed by stately Douglas fir and lodgepole pine. Named after the 19th century Italian leader Giuseppe Garibaldi, Mount Garibaldi soars 8,786 feet above sea level, and occupies an important place in the native history of the region. Cheakamus Canyon, home to spectacular lava columns and granite faces, will also hold you spellbound. Enjoy the fresh, open-air experience of our Heritage Observation Car and our legendary hospitality as you make this trip among newfound friends.
